So, you’ve bought your first hair extensions and you’re now wondering how you should care for them? This depends to some extent on whether you purchased human hair or synthetic hair extensions.
If you bought good quality human hair extensions then they are probably made from virgin cuticle hair (Remy Hair). This is hair that has not been chemically treated in any way and where the cuticles of the hair all run in one direction, which helps to prevent tangling and matting.
This type of human hair extension can be washed and styled as if it were your own hair. To maximize the lifespan of your human hair extensions you should never allow them to get too tangled or matted. Brush out the extensions from the ends, working towards the roots, before washing your hair, as wet hair is more fragile than dry hair.
Use good quality, mild shampoo and conditioner and wash your hair gently, in warm water. Washing synthetic hair in hot water may damage the fibers. Scrubbing or using a circular motion may also damage your hair – both extensions and your natural hair.
Don’t sleep on wet hair. This is a common way in which hair extensions are damaged.
Synthetic hair extensions should be washed in exactly the same way as human hair extensions but remember that for most types of synthetic hair you should not use any form of high heat on them such as hair rollers or a hair dryer (except on a cool setting). Frequent use of a high-heat hair dryer will singe your synthetic hair extensions, causing them to frizz. Normally, just towel-dry your hair and allow it to air-dry.
If it is important for you to be able to style your hair then you might want to consider the use of our Beverley Hills range of hair extensions. Human hair is blended with a heat-resistant fiber that will permit the use of rollers and hair dryers or our Illusions collection which is made from a full synthetic fiber called “Futura” where you can apply heat up to 440 F.
Remember: As hair extensions do not receive any natural oils from your scalp it is important to use a good quality shampoo and conditioner regularly. Doing so will extend the life of your extensions. Your hair stylist will be happy to advise you on the available choices.
